A Holistic Approach
Bankruptcy is more than just a practice for me—it is a calling that I’ve pursued as a passion, understanding that bankruptcy can be the best option for many people’s futures. While I focus primarily on Chapter 7, Chapter 13, and Chapter 11 cases (representing both creditors and debtors), I also assist California residents with other debt relief matters, such as debt settlement, student loan services, identity theft, online security, and more. Often, these issues can have a serious impact on people’s lives. Because of this, I will both guide people through the bankruptcy process and litigate for them in court, if necessary.
These issues not only have serious impacts, but they also often intersect. A client filing for bankruptcy, for instance, may also need counsel regarding wrongful foreclosure or the condemnation of their property. I am experienced in handling adversary proceedings (lawsuits in bankruptcy), outside the scope of normal bankruptcy measures. Also, I represent other cases of civil litigation as necessary.
A Multifaceted Background
My journey into the world of law was sparked by my family's legacy. My grandfather and great-uncle were lawyers, and their influence, combined with my natural inclination for wanting justice, led me to embrace the legal field. I began by earning my Bachelor of Arts degree from the esteemed University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974. Following my undergrad, I pursued my Juris Doctor degree, graduating cum laude from Southwestern Law School in 1977. Seeking further intellectual enrichment, I embarked on an academic journey to the University of Cambridge, where I obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1978.
Empathy Through Experience
My long and enriching career has provided me with insights into the financial and emotional struggles that individuals and businesses face when dealing with bankruptcy. This experience has given me a unique perspective, enabling me to connect with my clients on a personal level. I've seen the spectrum of challenges, and I'm here not only as an attorney but as someone who understands the hurdles and is committed to guiding clients through them.
A Memorable Triumph
Among the many experiences that have shaped my career, one of the most notable was a three-day court trial in bankruptcy court. This case eventually reached the appellate level and was upheld, leading to a significant victory for my client. The judgment, totaling $595,000, was ultimately settled for a sum remarkably close to the original amount. This achievement stands as a testament to my dedication to pursuing favorable outcomes for my clients.
Life Beyond Law
Outside the firm, I like to stay involved in the community. I am an active member of Wildfire Networking, Chairman of Ethnic Arts of Los Angeles, and a minor order of the clergy in the Church of England — an honor granted upon my graduation from the University of Cambridge. In the past, I have also been a part of numerous other community organizations which promote art, religion, and the law.
My love for art comes from my parents, who have a vast collection of African and contemporary art. My mother opened and ran her own gallery for 30 years, which ultimately inspired me to earn my bachelor’s degree in art history. Today, anyone who stops by my office can see some of my personal art collection. I have nine pieces total at the firm, but the one I’m most proud of is my sculpture of Garuda, an Indonesian symbol of protection, as it reminds me of my primary duty as an attorney.
